Sustainable solutions for greener living

Volunteers from UMW Toyota Motor and Malaysian Nature Society together with MRSM Langkawi’s students and teachers were enthusiastically involved in the recent UMW Green Shoots (UGS) initiative in Langkawi.

ENVIRONMENTAL sustainabilty involves responsibly managing resources, minimising waste and adopting practices that promote the long-term health of our planet.

It strives to create a balance between human activities and the Earth’s ecosystems to ensure a resilient and sustainable future.

As a responsible corporate, UMW Toyota Motor demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability through its active engagement in the UMW Green Shoots (UGS) initiative - a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme of UMW Group driven by UMW Toyota Motor and Perodua since 2021.

At the recent UGS event in the Kubang Badak Mangrove Reserve, Langkawi, a significant milestone was achieved with the planting of 5,900 trees, contributing to a total of 12,000 trees planted in 2023, including the 6,100 trees planted in Tanjung Tuan in March.

This steadfast dedication highlights the company's vision of fostering a greener and more sustainable future, integral to its role in redefining mobility.

‘Through initiatives like UGS, we aspire to embrace our philosophy of 'Move Your World', redefining mobility as an integral facet of daily life,’ says UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk K.Ravindran.‘Through initiatives like UGS, we aspire to embrace our philosophy of 'Move Your World', redefining mobility as an integral facet of daily life,’ says UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk K.Ravindran.

UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk K.Ravindran emphasised the urgency of addressing carbon emissions as a shared responsibility for a better future.

“Carbon is our No.1 enemy. Therefore, taking care of the environment is a shared responsibility for a better future.

“Through initiatives like UGS, we aspire to embrace our philosophy of 'Move Your World', redefining mobility as an integral facet of daily life."

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) and supporting the National 100-million Tree-Planting Campaign 2020-2050, the UGS initiative represents a significant stride towards a more sustainable future.

Embracing the theme "Green Malaysia. Our Trees. Our Life.", the initiative addresses climate change and environmental conservation.

This initiative is in line with Toyota Global commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This goal encompasses a practical and sustainable reduction in CO2 emissions, recognising that a one-size-fits-all approach may not be sufficient. Therefore, a multi-pathway approach, including the push for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), is imperative.

Through tree planting and CO2 emissions offsetting, UMW Toyota Motor actively contributes to the overarching mission of creating a sustainable future.

Ravindran highlighted Toyota’s belief in the transformative power of innovation and sustainable practices.

“Our goal is not only carbon neutrality but also the realisation of a happier, more connected society where individuals can align their choices with values and lifestyles.”

The strategic focus on planting mangrove trees amplifies the positive impact on the environment, serving as a natural barrier against erosion, improving water quality by filtering pollutants, and providing essential habitats for diverse wildlife.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from MRSM Langkawi's students and teachers, the local community of Kampung Kubang Badak, the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), and dedicated volunteers from UMW Toyota Motor and its dealers.

UMW Toyota Motor's active involvement in the UGS initiative exemplifies its role as a socially responsible corporate, committed to creating a sustainable and greener future for generations to come, reducing its environmental footprint and making a positive impact on society.
