Great Eastern celebrates its 115-year anniversary by doubling their medical annual limit and ramping up ESG efforts

Since 1908, Great Eastern – a multi-national insurance company, has made it a mission to safeguard its customers from life's unexpected twists and turns, enabling them to concentrate on meaningful pursuits.

Whether it involves developing innovative solutions to help Malaysians pursue their lifelong goals or empowering successive generations with financial freedom, Great Eastern has always prioritised its customers and their aspirations.

For Datuk Koh Yaw Hui, chief executive officer of Great Eastern Life Malaysia, customers are at the heart of everything the company does.

“Protecting our customers at every stage of life is what our business was founded on, growing a financial legacy to provide for their family is what drives us, and empowering them to ‘Reach for Great’ in everything they do is what inspires us,” he added.

This steadfast dedication to its customers has helped Great Eastern become preferred insurer for generations of Malaysians for over a century.

Expression of gratitude

To thank its loyal customers for their support over 115 years, Great Eastern has introduced a limited-time medical insurance plan designed to shield them from rising private healthcare costs and future hospitalisation expenses.

The SmartMedic Shield Double Annual Limit (SMS DAL) offers Malaysians the opportunity to double their medical coverage without incurring additional costs.

To boost their financial protection, Malaysians only need to purchase the SmartMedic Shield plan with an annual limit of RM2mil and add the SmartMedic Shield Extender rider with an annual limit of RM2mil.

Koh says customers are at the heart of Great Eastern’s long-standing presence. Koh says customers are at the heart of Great Eastern’s long-standing presence.

Great Eastern will then double the combined annual limit from RM4mil to RM8mil, all at no extra cost. More importantly, the annual limit is refreshed annually, with no lifetime cap.

The SMS DAL provides medical coverage until the age of 100 years (next birthday), ensuring customers are financially protected well into their golden years.

Peace of mind

SMS DAL offers a comprehensive range of benefits, encompassing pre- and post-hospitalisation treatments, outpatient care for conditions such as cancer, kidney dialysis, dengue fever and Zika virus, as well as coverage for ICU expenses and surgical fees.

The plan also includes benefits for emergency accidental outpatient treatment and accidental death to safeguard against unforeseen circumstances.

Recognising the importance of access to appropriate medical care post-hospitalisation, this insurance plan also extends coverage to include follow-up treatments and home nursing care.

Customers who opt for the room and board RM400 option, gain additional benefits including coverage for chiropractic treatments, speech and occupational therapy, as well as services by registered traditional Chinese medicine practitioners.

To further enhance the financial protection offered, the hospital room and board limit increases by 10% at the end of every three policy years, up to a cumulative total of 100% of the initial hospital room and board limit.

Celebrating unity and sustainability

Great Eastern also marked its 115th anniversary with a Hawaiian-themed 'luau' town hall, attended by its senior management, employees, and guests.

In keeping with the theme, attendees donned aloha shirts, floral prints, beach hats and 'lei' garlands, while the venue was adorned with giant inflatable palm trees, pineapples, tropical birds and cocktails.

The crowd enjoyed the many festivities held during the celebration including a lucky draw, games, performances, photo opportunities and a Hawaiian-themed anniversary cake.

During the event, Koh took the opportunity to commend the company's employees for their exceptional commitment to customers, and reiterated Great Eastern's pledges to its Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives.

“At Great Eastern, we do not believe in leaving the future to fate; we believe in shaping it,” said Koh, adding that it is the main reason why Great Eastern is accelerating its efforts to build a more environmentally friendly and socially responsible company.

As Malaysia's largest and most established life insurance company, Great Eastern recognises the impact its business decisions can have on these two elements.

As part of its commitment, the company has integrated ESG initiatives into its operations, conducting sustainability-related activities for its employees and underprivileged children to promote a sustainable lifestyle.

Through its corporate social responsibility programme – ChildrenCare, Great Eastern has contributed over RM3mil to underprivileged children since 1995.

Additionally, the company established a sustainability taskforce to ensure good governance and successful implementation of its corporate sustainability strategy.
