Creative ways to save and still have fun

All the snacks you want are right here at Giant stores, with great prices to boot.

Don’t get deflated because of inflation. Giant’s Lower Prices That Last campaign helps you to get creative with cutting costs.

WITH inflation at its highest since 2011, Malaysians have been having a hard time managing their household budgets, and are more calculative with holidays or indulging in fun activities such as going to the movies.

Every ringgit counts these days and so many families have had to change their lifestyle due to the higher cost of living.

While eating out and shopping sprees may not be on the cards as often, that doesn’t mean you need to lead a boring life. Why not try to inject some fun into your day-to-day activities at home and save money at the same time? Instead of binge watching the latest TV series, you can invite friends and neighbours over and do something different.

Mother of two Ann Teh says her family has been trying this out for a few months now and things have been working out great.

“We get the kids to invite their friends around and we do fun stuff like play board games and have a meal together,” says Teh of Bandar Utama, Selangor.

“Times are hard for everyone, but I think with a little planning and ingenuity, we can make this work, cut costs and increase our savings at the same time.”

To plan for the gatherings at home, Teh goes for promos and discounts and turns to campaigns like Giant’s Lower Prices That Last. Coping with inflation doesn’t have to be a challenge because unlike flash promotions that last for a day or two, Giant has kept its promise of long-term price reductions for a wide array of items since last November.

“I can shop any time and pick up some cool items that will lend themselves to whatever amusing activity we plan that week,” Teh shares.

Here are some simple ideas that you might want to try out, all while keeping your wallet in check.

Movie night

Can’t afford to fork out big bucks for your entire family to watch the latest blockbuster at the cineplex? No sweat. How about creating your own version of a movie night?

Pick a good movie you can enjoy at home together, dim the lights and bring out on the snacks.

You’ll certainly save loads, and you can plan a thematic night by pairing your movie with a fun food theme. Watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and stock up on Meadows Chocolate Malt Drink at RM12 for 1kg and Kit Kat Bites Ice-Cream at RM10 (750ml)) or tune in to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs with your favourite snack bowl.

Giant has a range of snacks to choose from so you can think of some great ideas – everything from Corntoz Corn Snacks at RM1.75 (100g) Meadows Potato Chips at RM2 (60g) to Cheers carbonated Drinks at RM2 (1.25l) and Coca-cola Zero Sugar at RM5.55 (4x320ml). Take your pick, then sit back and it’s lights, camera, action!

Fine dining

So maybe you can’t dine at some atas restaurant because the meals are costly.

Why not make some pasta con gamberoni at home instead and make like you’re in Italy?

You can get all the ingredients from Giant at affordable prices. Meadows Assorted Pasta is just RM3.75 per 500g, vannamei prawns at RM25 per kg, white garlic for just RM5 per kg and Naturel Extra Virgin Olive Oil at RM32.95 per litre.

Then all you need is some good decor to match. Invite your friends over and have an Italian-themed night, with Andrea Bocelli on the stereo and you’re good to go. Buon appetito!

But don’t stop there. Go on and make fancy dishes from around the world – fish and chips from Britain, chocolate souffle from France, or German apple strudel.

You can make this a weekly affair, share your photos on social media and start a trend. Giant’s Lower Prices That Last has fresh meat, fish, fruit and veggies, as well as a long list of other products to choose from.

Family clean-up day

Now that you have stopped getting in part-time cleaners, you have to do everything yourself.

Make clean-up a family activity and get everyone involved in the sweeping, mopping and laundry including the kids! You’ll not only save some cash, you’ll be able to impart good values and life lessons to your children.

Take them along when you go shopping to pick up household cleaning items, so they learn how to choose the right cleaning products and advise them how compare prices to get the best deals.

With Giant’s Lower Prices That Last campaign you’ll be able to save on Meadows Essential Spin Mop at RM29, Meadows Kitchen Cleaner at RM6.60 (500ml), Meadows Home Glass Cleaner at RM6.65 (500ml), Breeze Liquid Laundry Detergent Refill at RM19.50 (3.4kg), Downy Fabric Softener Refill 2 at RM11 (530ml) and many other items.
