For any jewellery to be considered as an heirloom piece, the main gems in it need to possess inherent value and lasting beauty, plus durability that does not change over generations of time, with proper care.
“We make it our job to know how to set these gems into attractive jewellery designs, to elevate their value as wearable art essentially,” explains DeGem’s Communication and Design Director Choong Jiayueh. “As a design house specialising in bespoke jewellery for over 40 years, we work very closely with and train our designers to look at gems of any colour, size and quantity to recommend sensible fitting designs. No matter simple or elaborate, our recommendations must thoughtfully bring out the stones’ beauty, and fit into the client’s lifestyle.”
“One uncommonly known fact when it comes to the crafting process is that because different gems have different hardness and inclusions, you need to have specific handcrafting expertise regarding how to mount different stones, so that they are secure and durable to wear for long term. We have mastered this from three gen
erations of collective experience, so that our in-house craftsmen are equipped with these skills.”Another skill that is a result of experience, is the matching of diverse coloured gems to make a truly unique set of heirloom jewellery. Sourcing the right nuanced hues to match rings, necklaces and bracelets in a collection takes a considerable amount of time, as gems are not standardised and it can sometimes takes months to narrow down the suitable sizes, shapes and colours.
The Love, Faith & Hope capsule collection is a good example of this skill, as DeGem’s brand owners have personally handpicked precious gemstones, to introduce to younger customers the possibilities of exquisite colour combinations for truly stunning and timeless heirloom pieces.
“Every ring is one-of-a-kind and hard to replicate in the exact shade of hues, thus making it a special limited collection,” explains Jiayueh. “The three-stone design represents Love, Faith & Hope, for yesterday, today and tomorrow.”
The collection also aims to raise awareness for rare coloured gemstones such as pink and blue spinels, and lilac sapphires to the market.
For more enquiries, the collection is available in all of DeGem’s boutiques in Bangsar, the Gardens, 1Utama, Pavilion, Ampang and online at www.degemdiamond.com.
