The power of playtime: Activity corners for kids at MAEPS

Etiqa has set up the EtiqaCares Corner@PKRC activity corners at three locations within the MAEPS centre in Selangor.

CHILDREN at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centre now get to have a bit of fun to pass the time.

Etiqa, a multi-channel distributor of insurance and takaful products, has set up the EtiqaCares Corner@PKRC activity corners at three locations within the MAEPS centre in Selangor.

The EtiqaCares Corner@PKRC provides a safe place for children for reading, arts and crafts, and games, while undergoing quarantine.

Two of these activity corners have been set up at the men’s and women’s quarantine halls, while the third is designated for the children of frontliners who are unable to leave them at home when they are on duty at the PKRC.

As of June 2021, seven halls are operating as quarantine centres for Covid-19 cases, with more than 2,000 people currently quarantined.

The EtiqaCares Corner@PKRC falls under Etiqa Cares – Etiqa’s flagship corporate responsibility commitment for Covid-19 initiatives.

With the worrying rise in mental health issues brought about by pandemic, Etiqa took the initiative to alleviate some of the stress faced by families with children at the PKRC through the EtiqaCares Corner@PKRC.

The activity corner is well stocked with books, toys, colouring kits, as well as 3D pens for children to create items such as keychains, and bookmarks.

“Etiqa is pleased to have been given this opportunity to work together with the PKRC to make the world a better place through the EtiqaCares Corner@PKRC,” said Etiqa Life Insurance Berhad CEO Paul Low.

“Being quarantined can result in people feeling isolated from the outside world, and with movement limited, stress among adults and children can reach high levels.

“We sincerely hope that through this activity corner, we are able to alleviate some of the mental stress that those quarantined feel.

“Parents will be able to focus on recovery, while frontliners will be able to perform their tasks at hand, knowing that their children are in a safe place where they can have fun and forget their worries.”

Low continued: “As an insurer that launched the first-in-Malaysia critical illness rider with mental illness coverage we are aware of how the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the mental health of Malaysians.

“So this meaningful project is just one of the ways that we would like to help in ensuring the mental well-being of all those involved, starting with the children,” said Low.

PKRC Integrated MAEPS 2.0 director Dr Shahabuddin Ibrahim said: “We are truly grateful to Etiqa for providing us with the EtiqaCares Corner@PKRC and for supporting by helping with patients’ mental health.

“With this contribution, we hope to give encouragement to the patients and children who have been quarantined here in PKRC Integrated MAEPS 2.

“In a situation involving the spread of Covid-19, the mental and emotional challenges should not be taken lightly and all preventive measures should be activated from now on.

“This activity corner is not only able to provide relief for the emotional stress among patients, but also among frontliners. In addition to doing activities at the corner, Health Ministry counsellors are also able to meet face-to-face with the patients if they need advice on mental and emotional problems.”

Since the start of the pandemic, Etiqa has actively assisted the country in its fight against Covid-19. Etiqa’s initiatives included:

  • Contributing towards the purchase of 300 oxygen flow meters to support Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor.
  • Purchase of 2.7 million units of LVD syringes for the Health Ministry to support the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.
  • Providing government hospitals preventive support with a RM10mil contribution for more than 68,000 Covid-19 test kits.
  • RM1mil for the purchase of ventilators through Mercy Malaysia.
  • RM1mil towards MERCY Malaysia’s Pandemic Fund.
  • A total of RM1.4mil contributed to the community through Etiqa’s Corporate Zakat Responsibility programme.
