The power of openness

IN 1986, when Koh King Kee organised the first-ever seminar on China’s reform and opening-up policy in Kuala Lumpur, he was impressed that the Chinese government officials - all members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) - who spoke at the seminar were open, inquisitive and eager to acquire fresh knowledge.

According to Koh, the president of KL thinktank Centre for New Inclusive Asia, the CPC leadership’s openness to learning from more advanced countries helped China find a development path suited to its own national circumstances.

Some of the highlights include a herd of wild elephants roaming through China’s Yunnan province, which has recently been making headlines worldwide.

The herd of 15 has trekked 500km after leaving a protection zone in Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in south Yunnan last year and arrived at the outskirts of the provincial capital Kunming on June 2. The journey is still underway.

Authorities marshalled extraordinary resources to monitor the herd and keep them away from residential areas. Forest fire brigade and public security departments at the provincial and township levels have sent teams to track elephants around the clock.

In their natural habitat in Xishuangbanna, local authorities have roped in technology to develop an app that allows users to identify, locate and track wild elephants to reduce encounters between humans and wild animals.

The Goddess of the Luo River, believed to be the daughter of emperor Fuxi in prehistoric legend, became a nymph after drowning in the river. She recently came alive in a video titled Rhapsody on the Luo River Goddess, which was shot underwater.

The performer delivered a breathtaking performance, having mastered not only her art, but also the technique of holding her breath. She created a splash with her graceful movements.

While much of the football-loving world has been focused on the machinations of the postponed Euro 2020 competition this summer, in the Ewenki Autonomous Banner of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, there is a more important tournament on the horizon.

Inspired by the 1986 World Cup, a group of local herders in Shine River region of the banner have nurtured a love of football and have held their own tournament for four decades.

All these and more are an indication of how openness has brought added to the wealth of experiences and knowledge that have contributed to making China the powerhouse it is today.
