PETALING JAYA: Sixteen-year-old open water swimmer Max Tang is set to make a splash on the world stage after being given the honour of carrying the Jalur Gemilang at the Oceanman World Finals in Miches, Dominican Republic, next month.
The Kuala Lumpur youngster will be among more than 4,500 swimmers from over 100 countries competing for honours at the prestigious championships.
Max earned his ticket to the world meet after a double triumph at the Oceanman Kota Kinabalu in July.
He emerged as the overall champion in both the 2km sprint and 5km half events, beating swimmers across all age groups, including experienced adults.
At the worlds, Max will compete in the 15-19 age category in both events.
"It is an incredible honour to represent Malaysia at the Finals, and an even greater privilege to carry our national flag," said Max.
"I am very proud to have this opportunity and will give my very best in both races."
Max featured at the Malaysian Games (Sukma) this year and was also longlisted for the 400m freestyle event at the SEA Age Group meet.
Away from the pool, Max, the Year 11 student at Garden International School, is equally determined to excel academically.
