Hoe Yean dominates the pool with three more golds

PETALING JAYA: Khiew Hoe Yean underlined his status as the best swimmer in the country at the Milo Age-Group swimming championships by adding three more gold medals to his collection.

Yesterday, the 19-year-old powered his way to victories in the 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 400m individual medley to take his impressive haul to seven golds at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil.

Earlier, he had also won the 100m, 400m freestyle, 1,500m freestyle and 200m backstroke.

So far, he has only qualified for the 200m backstroke, which is his pet event, for the Vietnam SEA Games.

Hoe Yean could have made the cut for the 200m freestyle, too, as he had impressed with a personal best of 1:49.00 en route to winning silver in the US Open early last month but he managed only 1:50.49 to win by four seconds from fellow national teammate Arvin Singh (1:54.23).

The qualifying mark is the bronze medal winning time of 1:48.59 at the Philippines SEA Games.

Said Hoe Yean: “I’m satisfied with my performance since we didn’t get any preparation for this meet. The time might be slower since we didn’t taper for this meet so overall it is good especially today.”

“In fact, I didn’t expect to hit the SEA Games qualifying mark in the 200m backstroke here, so it is kind of a bonus for me.” n BOYS
