PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's swimmer Tong Yu Jing has withdrawn from the Asian Games in Japan because of appendicitis and he is recovering well after undergoing successful emergency surgery on Monday (Sept 21).
The 21-year-old Yu Jing was scheduled to compete in the men's 50m freestyle and butterfly events on Monday and Thursday respectively but started experiencing severe abdominal pain and vomiting.
The National Sports Council (NSC) coordinated with the Malaysian Aquatics (MA) and the National Sports Institute (NSI) to ensure he was promptly admitted to Juntendo University Urayasu Hospital.
The medical staff confirmed the diagnosis and recommended immediate surgery to prevent complications.
As a result of the procedure, Yu Jing has officially withdrawn from his scheduled events and remains under observation in the hospital ward.
NSC will continue to monitor his recovery closely and provide updates as necessary.
