PETALING JAYA: National squash player Aifa Azman will undergo further tests to determine if she is fit to compete at the Open Squash Classic in New York next week.
The world No. 41 had suffered a concussion during her Qatar Classic second round match against France’s Melissa Alves after falling and hitting her head.
National coaching director Andrew Cross said the 23-year-old Aifa is awaiting doctors' advice on whether she could take to the courts in New York from Oct 5-9.
"She (Aifa) needs to see the doctor again, and from that advice we will need to make a decision on whether she plays next week or give it a miss,'' said Cross.
In Doha, Aifa was leading 2-1 against world No. 20 Alves, but things took a turn when Aifa fell and hit her head while chasing the ball to the back of the court in the fourth set at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
Aifa was deemed unfit to continue after failing the Sport Concussion Assessment Test, leaving Alves to take the win 9-11, 11-7, 7-11, 2-2, ret.
After the tournament in New York, Aifa is also set to compete at the Silicon Valley Open in California, but it remains to be seen if she will see action there from Oct 11-15.
