Squash: Sivasangari sends Aira packing in all-Malaysian opener at El Gouna

PETALING JAYA: National top women’s squash player S. Sivasangari made her way into the second round of the El Gouna International, but it came at the cost of sending her compatriot Aira Azman packing on Saturday (April 12).

World No. 11 Sivasangari won 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 in just 17 minutes at the El Gouna Squash Complex.

This was the third time both Malaysian players had met at a PSA tournament, with Sivasangari having won the previous two encounters.

Their most recent meeting was at the New Zealand Open last month, which Sivasangari won after a long five-set clash.

Aira has been competing back-to-back after just concluding her campaign at the Under-23 World Championships in Pakistan last week.

The 20-year-old made it to the semi-finals, but her path was halted by Egyptian Fayrouz Abouelkheir, who went on to win the inaugural tournament.

In the second round, seventh seed Sivasangari will take on Salma Hany of Egypt, who defeated Belgium’s Nele Gillis-Coll in the first round.

Meanwhile for Aira, her next campaign will see her compete at the Bermuda Open at the end of the month.
