GLASGOW: National weightlifter Irene Jane Henry is determined to make the most of her Commonwealth Games debut when she competes in the women’s 48 kg category.
The 21-year-old plans to smash her personal best record of an overall lift of 169 kg and to win at least a silver medal when she competes in her very first Commonwealth Games.
“I want to improve my personal record and if possible, I’d like to win a medal. My aim is to win at least a sliver medal.
“My best lift previously is 169 kg so far, I’m targeting a total of over 170 kg,” she said.
Irene’s spirits are buoyed by the prayers, support and messages from her family, which are also a source of strength for her at this crucial point just before she takes to the stage tomorrow.
“They always tell me to give my best, especially tomorrow and to keep my morale up. That’s what my mom told me,” she shared, adding that she is fired up to give her all to bring glory to Malaysia.
Irene did admit to having the jitters but said that she would not let it affect her performance.
“There is some nervousness and a bit of apprehension, but I’m happy to be here. Usually, I would control my breathing and also listen to music or watch a film to calm myself.” she added with a smile. — Bernama
