PETALING JAYA: National weightlifter Mohd Aznil Bidin gave Malaysia another reason to celebrate after winning the men's 65kg gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Sunday (July 26).
The victory saw Aznil make history as the first Malaysian athlete to win gold medals at three consecutive Commonwealth Games, having previously topped the podium in the men's 62kg event at Gold Coast 2018 and successfully defended his crown in Birmingham in 2022.
Competing at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo, Aznil set Games records in all three disciplines. He lifted 133kg in the snatch before clearing 166kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 299kg.
It was Malaysia's second gold medal in Glasgow after teammate Mohd Aniq Kasdan triumphed in the men's 60kg event earlier in the day.
Malaysia's medal haul was further boosted by Irene Jane Henry, who claimed bronze on her Commonwealth Games debut in the women's 48kg event.
Malaysia have now won two gold medals and two bronze medals in Glasgow.
Malaysia are targeting an overall haul of five golds, two silvers and four bronzes at this year's Games.
