PETALING JAYA: Lee Ronn is on track to write a new chapter for Malaysian wushu.
The 16-year-old exponent is hopeful of winning a place in the wushu competition at the Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal.
Wushu will make its long awaited debut on the youth Olympic stage from Oct 31-Nov 13.
Lee Ronn is looking good to secure a quota slot in the boys’ changquan and gunshu all-round events following an impressive performance at the recent World Junior Championships in Tianjin, China.
At the world junior meet, he returned home with two silver medals in the changquan and gunshu categories for youth (15-18).
“It’s been a good campaign for me at the world level competitions so far,” said the Melaka-born exponent, whose chance to compete at the Youth Olympics will open doors to more opportunities with the national team.
“The competition is tougher now because of the big number of entries and they had to do preliminary rounds for my events.
“I also won gold in my age-group category at the Asian Junior Championships in China last year.
“I managed to win gold in the lower age-group category at the last World Junior Championships in Brunei in 2024, so I’m happy to keep my performance level steady.
“My hope is to secure a quota slot for Malaysia in my events at the Youth Olympics.
“It is everybody’s dream to compete as an Olympian and I’m excited as it is also the first time the sport has been accepted into the programme.
“I am now in the national wushu team but I have many seniors ahead of me.
“But I know I have a chance like everyone else if I keep performing,” added Lee Ronn.
