Wushu champion Cheong Min and shuttlers Ee Wei-Tang Jie among big names shortlisted for SAM Awards

PETALING JAYA: Wushu world champion exponent Tan Cheong Min and Paralympic champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin are among the big names that have been shortlisted for the 2025 Sportswriters Association of Malaysia-100PLUS Awards taking place on May 13 in Kuala Lumpur.

Cheong Min, who won three gold medals at the Brazil World Championships last year, is among the favourites for the Athlete of the Year award.

Badminton pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who won the mixed doubles world title in Paris for the first time last year, are also strong contenders.

World Cup singles lawn bowler winner Emma Firyana Saroji, tenpin bowler Rafiq Ismail and pencak silat exponent Abdul Latif Maxzakir have also been nominated.

Bonnie, who claimed the below 72kg world title in Cairo last year, is among the frontrunners for the Para Athlete of the Year Award.

Shuttler Cheah Liek Hou, long jumper Abdul Latif Romly as well as swimmers Abdul Halim Mohammad and Carmen Lim have also been shortlisted.

The winners in each category will take home RM10,000 prize money and a trophy.

Supported by 100PLUS since 2003, the awards also recognise excellence in sports journalism across multiple categories, with the overall winner receiving the Siebel Award.
