FORMER champion Amy Kwan Dict Weng may not be around but trust her successors to deliver in rhythmic gymnastics.
The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games champion has retired after a successful stint but not after passing the baton to her reliable juniors Koi Sie Yan, Izzah Amzan and Ng Joe Ee to live up to the country’s one gold medal target in the sport.
Amy dazzled in Australia by winning gold in ribbon, silver in team and two bronzes in the individual all-around and hoop.
It will be hard to fill her sizeable shoes but team manager Beh Yeat Chen believes the trio will rise to the challenge.
“Sie Yan, Izzah and Joe Ee have the opportunity to win the gold. It depends on their performances on the day really,” said Yeat Chen.
Sie Yan looks to be the best bet to go one better than her commendable outing at the last Games. Then, she won three silvers in the ball, clubs and team events.
The 23-year-old is also coming into the Games on good form after successfully defending her individual all-around gold in the Hanoi SEA Games in May.
Yeat Chen, though, does not expect it to be easy for Sie Yan and her teammates with the Canadian and Australian gymnasts set to pose a strong challenge.
“I believe with the hard work by all, we are on the right track to produce more good gymnasts.”
The competition will start on Aug 4 at the Arena Birmingham.
The team, who are currently undergoing their last phase of training in Minsk, Belarus, will leave for Birmingham on Saturday.
