PETALING JAYA: National artistic gymnast Mohd Sharul Aimy came so close to breaking a 20-year medal drought for Malaysia in artistic gymnastic.
The 24-year-old landed with controlled precision twice but had to settle for a heartbreaking fourth place in the men's vault final at Glasgow International Arena on Tuesday (July 28).
Sharul scored 13.733 points to finish tied with Cyprus’ Neofytos Kyriakou.
But Kyriakou was awarded the bronze on a tiebreak after receiving the higher execution score, earning his nation’s first Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s vault.
In a fiercely contested final, Canada’s Felix Dolci clinched the gold with 13.766 points, while England’s Luke Whitehouse took silver with 13.749.
The last time Malaysia won an artistic gymnastics medal at the Commonwealth Games was in 2006, when Ng Shu Wai claimed silver in the men’s floor exercise in Melbourne.
Shu Wai, now the national coach, also won silver in the same event at the 2002 Manchester Games.
