Rachel gears up for Asiad with courage after Glasgow miss

PETALING JAYA: A teary-eyed Rachel Yeoh (pic) put up a brave front after her Commonwealth Games medal dream was cruelly snatched away by just 0.133 points on Monday.

The national artistic gymnast was left heartbroken after narrowly missing out on a bronze medal in the women’s uneven bars final in Glasgow but the painful setback has only fuelled her determination to come back stronger after this.

Rachel finished fourth in the women’s uneven bars final with 13.533 points, just 0.133 behind Emily Roper of Wales, who secured bronze on 13.666.

Australia’s Kate McDonald claimed gold with 14.333 points while Canada’s Elisabeth Black took silver with 13.900.

The 27-year-old is plotting redemption at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in September.

“It really hurts ... I was just a little short. The medal slipped away like that. I gave my best but it was not meant to be,” said Rachel, fighting back tears.

“I had prepared very well for the Commonwealth Games. When I entered the arena, I just told myself, ‘just go for it’,” added Rachel.

Despite the disappointment of missing out by such a close margin, the three-time SEA Games champion said: “I need to increase the difficulty level of my routines for the Asian Games and competitions after this.

“I need to make up for what I lost here.”
