PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) clinched their 12th Super League title after defeating Brunei 3-0 at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan on Sunday.

Spanish midfielder Ager Aketxe broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, curling a superb left-footed free kick from 30 metres into the top right corner of Haimie Nyaring’s goal.

Brunei believed they had found the equaliser in the 54th minute through a breathtaking counter-attack led by Portuguese winger Miguel Oliveira and finished by young sensation Hakeme Yazid Said.

However, after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, the goal was ruled offside, sparing JDT’s blushes and giving the Southern Tigers renewed momentum.

JDT doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when Spanish wingback Oscar Arribas latched onto a pass from midfielder Afiq Fazail and fired a superb right-footed finish past Haimie.

The third goal came just three minutes later. Brazilian winger Marcus Guilherme received a pass from Arribas, took a touch, and produced a cheeky finish beyond the Brunei goalkeeper.

With the victory and five matches still remaining in the season, JDT now sit on 57 points from 19 games, having won every league match so far, and hold a commanding 17-point lead over second-placed Kuching City.
