Palmero returns to Tenerife after Salamanca terminates loan deal

PETALING JAYA: Spanish third-division club Unionistas de Salamanca have officially announced that they have terminated the loan of Gabriel Palmero.

The 23-year-old would now return to his second-division club CD Tenerife, uncertain about his future after FIFA upheld their decision to suspend him for a year.

“Unionistas de Salamanca Football Club have reached an agreement with Club Deportivo Tenerife to terminate the loan of player Gabriel Palmero, following notification received from FIFA on Sept 25 and the rejection of the player’s appeal on Nov 3,” said an official statement from Unionistas on Friday (Nov 7) evening.

“The agreement has not entailed any financial cost for the club. Unionistas de Salamanca would like to thank the player for his dedication during his time in Salamanca.”

On Monday (Nov 3), FIFA rejected the Football Association of Malaysia’s (FAM) appeal and upheld all sanctions - including 12-month suspensions and a fine of 2,000 Swiss francs each for the seven players involved, among them Palmero, and a fine of 350,000 Swiss francs (RM1.8mil) against the national body.

The other players suspended are Rodrigo Holgado, Facundo Garcés, Jon Irazabal, João Figueiredo, Héctor Hevel and Imanol Machuca.

FAM have since stated that they have requested a motivated decision from FIFA and would act based on the advice of their legal counsel before proceeding to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
