PETALING JAYA: A 2-1 advantage may look comfortable on paper but Sabah know their FA Cup quarter-final tie against Kelantan is far from over.
The Rhinos will take that slender lead into today’s second leg at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu, determined to finish the job and book their place in the semi-finals.
Leading the charge is striker Ajden Mujagic, who found the net in the first leg and is eager to help his team cross the finish line.
“The atmosphere in the dressing room is very good. Everyone is focused and motivated to reach the semi-finals,” said the 27-year-old Bosnian forward.
“We know it’s not over yet, but we believe in ourselves and in this team.
“We’re taking it step by step, giving our best in every training session.”
Mujagic expects a tough challenge from Kelantan, who have shown resilience despite their struggles this season.
“Kelantan are a good side. We can’t underestimate them,” he said.
“They’re strong defensively but I believe we have enough quality to go through.
“The key will be patience, focus and full concentration from the first minute to the last.”
While Sabah hold the upper hand, concerns linger over their lack of firepower in front of goal.
Mujagic has scored twice in three FA Cup matches but has managed just one goal in five league outings.
Still, the towering forward remains optimistic that goals will come once the team hit full stride.
“Strikers are always judged by goals – that’s normal,” he said.
“But the most important thing is that we work together to fix our weaknesses and improve as a team.
“When the team play well, the goals will follow naturally.”
For Mujagic, who is experiencing football outside Europe for the first time, life in Sabah has been a rewarding challenge. Since arriving in July, he has quickly endeared himself to the fans and is determined to repay their faith.
“I’d describe my time in Sabah as good so far but I know I can still do better,” he said.
“The people here are very kind and welcoming, which helped me adapt quickly. It’s my first experience in Asia, and the style of football is different – but I feel I’m improving every week.”
Sabah fans will be hoping that improvement continues tonight as Mujagic and his teammates look to turn a narrow lead into a semi-final berth.
