Da Silva can fancy another award, but he gets a bigger kick out of the fans

PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim’s (JDT) Brazilian hotshot Bergson Da Silva looks set to bag the Super League Golden Boot for the second time in his career.

The 34-year-old took his tally to 26 goals in 20 games after hitting a hattrick in the 6-1 demolition of Kedah at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar on Saturday.

But instead of talking about picking up another accolade, Da Silva, who is expected to be a naturalised player for Malaysia in the future, deflected the attention to the passionate JDT supporters.

“The fans motivated us as they came all the way to Kedah to cheer us on. We still have two more games in the league and we aim to keep winning for them,’’ he said in a video message posted on the club’s social media page.

“And Selamat Hari Raya to everyone.’’

The mercurial Da Silva found the net in the 17th, 23rd and 94th minutes to help the Southern Tigers stay unbeaten in the league. The others on target were Romel Morales (18th minute), Indonesian centreback Jordi Amat (61st) and midfielder Nazmi Faiz Mansor (83rd).

Kedah’s lone goal came via winger Afeeq Iqmal Rosli in the 34th minute.

Meanwhile, Kedah coach Victor Andrag said the gulf in class between the two sides was apparent but he credited his charges for still giving their all despite the club’s financial crisis.

“You can see the quality they have compared to us. No further elaboration is needed,’’ he said.

JDT now have 64 points from 22 games while Kedah remain 11th with 20 points from 21 games.
