PETALING JAYA: National diver Nur Dhabitah Sabri has no intentions of leaving the pool just yet as her love for the sport remains strong after taking home three gold medals at the Malaysia Open which concluded yesterday.
The 25-year-old clinched the mixed synchronised 3m springboard event with partner Gabriel Gilbert Daim, as well as the women’s synchronised 3m springboard event with Ong Ker Ying.
Dhabitah also won gold in the mixed team event last Saturday at the National Aquatics Centre in Bukit Jalil.
After the Paris Olympics, Dhabitah had been on the fence about continuing her time as a diver, but she seems to have found her passion once again.
“I feel that I have already rested well enough since then. Whatever it is, my place is still diving, to be in the pool. I’ve missed it,” said Dhabitah.
“My mental health and physical recovery has been going well so far. I’m so glad to be back.
“My family and coaches have always been supporting me since day one, so it would have been a waste if I just stopped.
“For me, I want to show more of what I have in me.
“I will keep going until I have nothing else left to prove,” she said.
In the mixed event, Dhabitah and Gabriel scored a total of 242.10, ahead of the Indonesian pairing of Aldinsyah Putra-Gladies Lariesa, who scored 230.40, while Max Lee-Alycia Lim from Singapore took bronze with a total of 202.08.
Dhabitah and Gabriel last paired up together for the synchronised event in the 2017 Diving Grand Prix when they won the bronze in the mixed synchronised 3m springboard event.
Dhabitah said she was happy to work together with Gabriel once again as he had been absent from competing for some time due to injury.
“I want to say thanks and that I’m proud of Gabriel. I’m satisfied and happy to finish this competition as planned. It has been a long time since Gabriel and I teamed up, but now we’re both back,” she said.
Following national diver Ooi Tze Liang’s unfortunate incident where he hit his head on the diving board on Saturday, Dhabitah said the main goal for the divers was to ensure they were safe.
“Gabriel just recovered from an injury, so we just wanted to be safe. We didn’t want to push too hard because injuries can last for a very long time,” she said.
Meanwhile, national diver Jellson Jabilin clinched the men’s 10m platform gold medal with 397.50 points ahead of compatriot Enrique Maccartney Harold in second with 391.15 and bronze medallist Nishida Reo of Japan with 353.70
Malaysia finished on top of the medal table with seven golds and three silvers, while New Zealand came in second (2-0-1) followed by Hong Kong (1-1-1).
