PETALING JAYA: The opening day of the Malaysia Diving Open was marred by the unfortunate incident involving national diver Ooi Tze Liang.
The 30-year-old ended up in hospital after bumping his head on the diving board during the 3m springboard individual final competition at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil.
Tze Liang did not finish the 3m springboard competition as he was stretchered off the venue and sent to hospital.
Tze Liang is due to undergo further checks, including a CT scan, to determine the impact of the collision.
Technical director Bryan Nickson Lomas described it as an unfortunate accident.
“It could have happened to any diver,” said Bryan.
“Tze Liang had raised his difficulty and he went off balance in the second dive.
“The lifeguard acted fast to bring him out of the pool and medical attention was given immediately and they bandaged his head,” said the Olympian.
Tze Liang had earlier finished on top with 411.75 points in the preliminary rounds.
New Zealand’s Frazer Tavener took gold with 340.05 points ahead of Malaysia’s Mohd Syafiq Puteh, who chalked up 337.80 points for the silver.
Pandelela Rinong bagged two golds yesterday by coming out on top in the women’s 10m platform individual and in the mixed team event with Nur Dhabitah Sabri, Gabriel Gilbert Daim and Enrique Maccartney Harold.
