PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will press on with their French Open campaign this week despite the unrest in parts of France.
The French Open starts today at the Arena Grand Paris, with Malaysia fielding 14 entries led by women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, who are fresh from winning the Denmark Open on Sunday.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary Datuk Kenny Goh said none of the Malaysian players have withdrawn, although they have been reminded to remain vigilant.
BAM have also notified the Malaysian Embassy in Paris of the players and coaches attending the tournament to ensure support is available if needed.
“We have written to our embassy in Paris and informed them of the names of the players and coaches who will be involved in the tournament.
“We hope the embassy will be able to assist if anything happens.
“For now, nobody has withdrawn. The tournament has also not been cancelled,” said Kenny.
France was hit by widespread demonstrations on Saturday involving trade unions, students and supporters of the Yellow Vest movement, with protesters voicing their anger over the cost of living and concerns over the future of young people.
The protests later descended into violent clashes in several areas, with more than 2,400 people reportedly arrested nationwide.
