PETALING JAYA: A year after surviving a horrific motorcycle accident, former national coach Wong Tat Meng is back courtside and guiding players to titles again.
Tat Meng was seen in the coaching chair giving instructions to his player Rafi Zafran Ferary at the Sydney International last week, in a post shared by Sydney-based Roketto Badminton.
It proved to be a successful outing for Rafi, who went on to claim the men’s singles title after beating Taiwan’s Huang Yu 21-19, 15-21, 21-7 in the final.
"A huge congratulations to Rafi Zafran Ferary and coach Wong Tat Meng for bringing home the men’s singles title," Roketto Badminton said in a social media post.
Another of Tat Meng’s charges, Sydney Tjonadi, also enjoyed a good run by reaching the mixed doubles final with Raphel Deloy.
The pair, however, had to settle for runners-up after losing 13-21, 16-21 to Taiwan’s Lu Chen-Chang Yun-jung.
Tat Meng’s return to the coaching chair comes after he went through a difficult period following a serious motorcycle accident in Sydney in September last year.
The former coach of Lee Zii Jia was seriously injured in the accident on Putty Road in the Garland Valley region and had to be admitted to the intensive care unit.
After undergoing intensive treatment and rehabilitation, Tat Meng showed encouraging signs of recovery and was discharged from Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital in Sydney on Nov 28.
