Se-young eyes more history after record-breaking 47th crown

PETALING JAYA: An Se-young is building a legacy of her own in women’s singles after her Denmark Open victory on Sunday gave her a record 47th international title.

The South Korean came from behind to beat Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi 21-23, 21-14, 21-18 in the final at the SJF Bank Arena in Odense.

The victory saw Se-young move past Indonesian legend Susi Susanti, who had won 46 titles during her career.

Spain’s Carolina Marin, who announced her retirement in March, is next with 39 titles.

Se-young, however, is not hiding her desire to continue breaking records and creating more history.

“I want to make a lot of history and break records but I focus on one match at a time.

“That is my motivation.

“The crowds turn out for me and I’m so happy people enjoy every match I play,” said Se-young in a post-match interview with BWF.

The 24-year-old has already won almost every major title in the sport, including the women’s singles gold medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

She has continued that impressive run this year by winning the World Championships, Asian Games and Asian Championships, while also helping South Korea capture the Asia Team Championships and Uber Cup Finals.
