PETALING JAYA: Goh Jin Wei (pic) is set to slide further down the world rankings after crashing out in the women’s singles second round of the Vietnam Open.
Jin Wei went down 18-21, 16-21 to Isharani Baruah of India yesterday, a day after knocking out Taiwan’s Liao Jui-chi 21-16, 21-14 in Ho Chi Minh City.
With another early defeat, Jin Wei is likely to take a tumble from her current world No. 54 spot.
The 2017 SEA Games champion needs to step up to the plate if she harbours hopes of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
It was also the end of the road for Siti Zulaikha Azmi after she went down 16-21, 7-21 to Huang Ching-ping of Taiwan.
On Wednesday, S. Kisona retired after trailing Passa-Orn Phannachet of Thailand 3-11.
In the men’s doubles, Choong Hon Jian-Wong Vin Sean outplayed compatriots Lee Yi Bo-Lim Tze Jian 21-16, 21-11 to check into the last eight.
There was also some good news in the mixed doubles when Tan Zhi Yang-Teoh Mei Xing reached the quarter-finals with a 21-14, 21-17 win over Taiwan’s Tsai Fu-cheng-Sung Yu-hsuan.
They will play top seeds Wu Guan-xun-Lee Chia-hsin of Taiwan next.
The challenge of the other mixed doubles pairs – Too Ming Yap-Lee Yu Shan and Goh Boon Zhe-Dania Sofea Zaidi – has ended.
