PETALING JAYA: There were high fives all around for Malaysia as our junior shuttlers clinched five titles at the Philippines International Junior Series yesterday.
Malaysia swept all three Under-19 doubles crowns and claimed two Under-15 singles titles at the Gameville Central Park in Manila.
Mixed doubles duo Khairul Azlan Khashah-Nur Aina Maisarah Hatta lived up to their top billing by defeating Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen-Nguyen Tat Duy Loi 21-16, 21-8.
Khairul then followed it up with another win with boys’ doubles partner Iqbal Yusuf, as they too clinched the title as top seeds after beating compatriots Ungku Ameer-Ivan Lim 21-16, 17-21, 23-21.
Girls’ doubles pair Leong Hwee Ling-Toeh Min Yi completed Malaysia’s clean sweep of the Under-19 doubles titles with a 21-16, 21-19 victory over Thailand’s Kungkaew Kakanik-Montra Sae Jiew.
In the boys’ Under-15 singles category, Julius Yeo secured the title with a convincing 21-14, 21-9 win over Thailand’s Thadesha Udomhunsakul.
Leanne Fong-Liew Xin Yan won the girls’ doubles event after they beat home players Seanna Berce-Psalm Tablante 21-19, 21-13.
Boys’ singles shuttler Leong Di Shan came close to winning the boys’ Under-19 title, but fell 22-20, 17-21, 16-21 to Vietnam’s Nguyen Tat Duy Loi.
Girls’ singles player Lim En Yu was also forced to settle for second after she lost to India’s Kyra Raina 21-16, 17-21, 18-21 in the Under-15 final.
