Soon Huat-Shevon survive scare to reach China Open second round

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie were made to work hard before booking their place in the second round of the China Open on Wednesday (July 22).

The Malaysians were pushed all the way by Japan's world No. 420 pair Hiroki Midorikawa-Misaki Matsumoto before coming through 21-15, 16-21, 21-19 in 49 minutes at the Changzhou Olympic Sports Centre.

They now face a much sterner test against China's Guo Xinwa-Chen Fanghui in the second round.

Meanwhile, it was a first-round exit for women's singles shuttler Wong Ling Ching.

Making her China Open debut, Ling Ching lost 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 to South Korea's world No. 15 Sim Yu-jin in 50 minutes.
