Roy King excited to test out new combo with Kai Wun after Japan Open

PETALING JAYA: After a hectic six months of competition, men’s doubles shuttler Yap Roy King appreciates some downtime but is ready to get going again with new partnerships on the horizon.

The 25-year-old had some time away from the courts after the Indonesian Open earlier this month but is set for his next outing at the Japan Open from July 14-19.

But it will be Roy King’s last tournament with partner Wan Arif Wan Junaidi for the time being, as he will be teaming up with Tee Kai Wun for the China Open, Taipei Open and Korean Open in the following weeks.

Roy King said he is excited to test out the new pairing as a fresh start could spark positive results.

“I think it’s a good pairing, although we have not trained together yet,” said Roy King.

“We will start in China, but I’m excited. It will feel fresh and will restore the feeling of bringing the fight to others, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Roy King added that the past six months have been hectic, and some time away from the court also does players some good.

“Of course, taking some time off helps. It helps us players reset and regain our focus.

“We’re always competing in a packed tournament schedule, so this time it helps us get our rhythm back.”

Roy King added that he enjoys his solitude and usually prefers a getaway with a sea view.

“I like to go to places where there is no one, and with a sea view,” he said.

For his next outing at the Japan Open, Roy King said he and partner Arif aim to do better than their quarter-final exit last year.

“We have about three weeks until Japan, and we just hope to do better than we did last year. Hopefully we can make it to the semi-finals,” said Roy King.
