Macau misery for Goh

Unfortunate: It is the third time that Goh Jin Wei has been unable to complete a match this year.

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Goh Jin Wei’s injury woes resurfaced after the two-time world junior champion was forced to retire from a match.

The Penangite retired during her second round match against India’s eighth seed Anmol Kharb at the Macau Open at the Macau East Asian Games Dome yesterday.

The match had lasted only eight minutes, with the world No. 57 Jin Wei trailing 4-12 before she decided she could not continue.

It marked the third time this year that Jin Wei has been unable to complete a match, having also retired in the Thailand Masters final in January.

A similar incident occurred during the Uber Cup Finals in Horsens in April when she was forced to retire against Japan’s Riko Gunji.

Her coach, Nova Armada, said he was awaiting an update from his assistant, Seto Danu Kusuma, on Jin Wei’s condition as he is currently accompanying Cheah Liek Hou at the French Para Badmin-ton International in Mulhouse.

“I am in France with Liek Hou. My assistant went with Jin Wei, so I haven’t called her yet,” said Nova when contacted.

Jin Wei is scheduled to compete next at the Taiwan Open from July 28-Aug 2 before heading to the Korean Masters from Aug 4-9.

Jin Wei underwent colectomy surgery in 2019 and has struggled physically ever since.

However, she has made encouraging progress this year and ended her eight-year title drought by winning the Singapore International Challenge in February.

And that saw her securing a few sponsors as she bids to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
