Carmen-Xin Yee pass early test to advance at Macau Open


PETALING JAYA: Women’s doubles pair Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee kept their Macau Open campaign alive after surviving an early scare against India’s Priya Konjengbam-Shruti Mishra in the first round yesterday.

The second seed and world No. 23 Malaysians had to fight their way back from a game down to beat world No. 40 Priya-Shruti 20-22, 21-16, 21-12 in 67 minutes and book their spot in the second round.

It was a longer match for Carmen-Xin Yee as their previous two wins over their opponents were in straight games.

Carmen-Xin Yee are set to take on Taiwan’s Chou Yun-an-Sung Yi-hsuan for a spot in the quarter-finals after the pair defeated Malaysians Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhing Yi 21-16, 21-13.

Chong Jie Yu-Vanessa Ng also suffered an early exit as they lost to Taiwan’s Ko Ruo-hsuan-Lin Jia-yin 17-21, 14-21.

In the men’s doubles, veteran duo Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Azriyn Ayub advanced into the second round after they defeated Indonesia’s new pairing of Putra Erwiansyah-Bagas Maulana 21-14, 21-15.

The top seed Malaysians have now set up a familiar clash as they take on compatriots Boon Xin Yuan-Lwi Sheng Hao, who defeated India’s Bhargav Ram Arigela-Viswa Tej Gobburu 21-16, 21-12.
