PETALING JAYA: After a string of disappointing results in recent tournaments, Malaysia's men's doubles pairs finally have something to cheer about after booking their places in the quarter-finals of the Korean Masters.
Playing in the second round at the Asan Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium on Thursday, Man Wei Chong-Soh Wooi Yik reached the last eight for the first time after suffering early exits in their previous three tournaments.
They defeated Singapore's Nge Joo Jie-Willard Wee 21-18, 21-14.
Taiwan Open runners-up Aaron Chia-Aaron Tai also booked their place in the quarter-finals after beating Goh V Shem-Choi Sol-gyu 21-14, 21-13.
Tee Kai Wun-Yap Roy King also advanced with a comfortable 21-15, 21-13 victory over Jin Young-Lee Jong-min.
However, it was the end of the road for independent pair Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong, who went down 16-21, 21-17, 13-21 to third seeds He Zhi-wei-Huang Jui-hsuan.
In the mixed doubles, Chen Tang Jie-Clarissa San needed three games to upset fourth seeds Wu Hsuan-yi-Yang Chu-yun 21-12, 13-21, 21-11.
Loo Bing Kun-Noraqilah Maisarah also advanced after defeating Australia's Andika Ramadiansyah-Nozomi Shimizu 21-15, 22-20.
Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin also came through a tough second-round match, beating Kim Joon-young-Lee Yu-lim 13-21, 21-15, 25-23.
In the men's singles, independent shuttler Cheam June Wei continued his fine run by defeating China's world No. 49 Dong Tianyao 21-10, 21-13.
However, Eogene Ewe was unable to join him in the quarter-finals after going down 23-21, 19-21, 13-21 to Taiwan's Su Li-yang.
