Dates confirmed for first Lee Chong Wei Cup tourney

PETALING JAYA: The dates and venue for the inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup have been confirmed, with the tournament set to be held from Aug 29-Sept 6 at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.

The junior tournament was launched in February and offers a total prize purse of RM100,000, making it the richest junior badminton tournament in the country.

Winners will also have the opportunity to undergo a selection session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM).

Registration will open at noon on June 15 and is limited to 128 participants, with a further 32 spots available on the waiting list.

“Participants on the waiting list will be contacted should there be any withdrawals or vacancies among the 128 confirmed entries.

“The competition format will see 128 players battling for 32 places in the 64-player main draw. The 32 players who advance from the qualifying stage will join 32 players nominated by their respective State Badminton Associations, completing the field,” said the Lee Chong Wei Cup organisers in a statement.

The tournament will also use the BWF’s new 15x3 scoring system, which is set to be officially introduced in January 2027.

The inaugural edition of the tournament will feature three age categories: Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17.
