Johor set to play host to Super 100 meet in October

PETALING JAYA: Johor will once again host the Malaysia Super 100 badminton tournament, which is scheduled to be held from Oct 13-18 at the Educity Sports Complex in Iskandar Puteri.

Johor Badminton Association (JHBA) president Datuk Chong Juong Chain said preparations are already underway and hopes this year's edition will surpass the success of the previous two tournaments.

Despite rising costs, Juong Chain insisted it would not affect JHBA's plans to deliver another successful event.

He also pointed to Johor's growing ambition to establish itself as a badminton hub, backed by strong support from the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, and the state government.

"We have to keep moving forward and sport must continue. The development of a state is important and sport is part of that growth.

"The state government believe sport can play a major role in boosting the economy. We can also see the strong support that the Regent of Johor (TMJ) has shown towards badminton and other sports," said Juong Chain.

For now, Juong Chain feels Johor are better off focusing on hosting Super 100 tournaments rather than rushing into bids for higher-tier events such as Super 500 or Super 1000 competitions, which require greater financial resources and sponsorship support.

"We know our capabilities. At the moment, JHBA are not ready to host tournaments at a higher level. Super 100 is the level we are comfortable organising for now."

This will be the second consecutive year that Johor are hosting the Malaysia Super 100 event.

The inaugural edition in 2024 was organised by the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association (KLBA) at Stadium Titiwangsa.

Malaysia have enjoyed success throughout the tournament's three editions, with local players reaching the podium each year. Last year, men's doubles pair Kang Khai Xing-Aaron Tai went all the way to lift the title on home soil.
