PETALING JAYA: Malaysian sports lost one of their former greats after 1967 Thomas Cup captain Datuk Teh Kew San passed away on Thursday (May 14) at the age of 91.
His wife, Datin Ng Mei Ling, revealed that he had lost his appetite over the past few days after being admitted to hospital due to urinary problems.
Among Kew San’s biggest achievements was helping Malaysia win the 1967 Thomas Cup alongside Datuk Tan Aik Huang, Datuk Yew Cheng Hoe, Datuk Ng Boon Bee, Datuk Tan Yee Khan and Datuk Billy Ng.
Malaysia defeated arch rivals Indonesia 6-3 in a thrilling final at Istora Senayan in Jakarta.

Kew San also won the All-England men’s doubles title with Lim Say Hup in 1959 and came close to defending the crown the following year before losing in the final to Denmark’s Finn Kobbero-Poul Erik Nielsen.
He also captured the Asian men’s singles title in Kuala Lumpur in 1962 after defeating fellow Malaysian Datuk Billy Ng in the final.
Kew San also partnered Ng Mei Ling in mixed doubles and won the Malaysian Open twice, first in 1962 before adding another title in 1965.
Said the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary general Datuk Kenny Goh.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of former national badminton great, Datuk Teh Kew San, at the age of 91. He was the former captain of Malaysia’s victorious 1967 Thomas Cup team," said Kenny.
"A versatile and distinguished player, Datuk Teh Kew San brought immense pride to the nation through his achievements on the international stage."
