Danish legend Hoyer to be inducted into BWF Hall of Fame

PETALING JAYA: Former Badminton World Federation (BWF) president Paul-Erik Hoyer will be inducted into the BWF Hall of Fame.

The world body announced that the ceremony will be held during their annual general meeting in Horsens, Denmark, on April 25.

The honour recognises Hoyer’s long contribution to the sport, not only as an administrator but also in helping badminton grow globally.

The award, under the administration category, is the highest distinction in the BWF Hall of Fame and is only given on rare occasions to individuals whose leadership has left a lasting impact on the sport.

Past recipients include former BWF president Lu Sheng Rong and the late Sir Craig Reedie.

Hoyer became the 19th BWF president in 2013 and served for 12 years, including re-elections in 2017 and 2021.

“Throughout his presidency, Hoyer was a strong advocate for BWF development initiatives and a committed supporter of the Federation’s vision of giving every child a chance to play badminton for life.

“His emphasis on inclusion, opportunity and integrity helped shape BWF into a stronger and more respected international federation.

“Hoyer’s forthcoming induction into the BWF Hall of Fame in the administrator category formally recognises his enduring impact on the sport and his leadership at the highest level of international badminton,” said BWF in a statement.

Before taking charge of the BWF, Hoyer served as deputy chairman of Badminton Denmark from 2005 to 2010, before going on to become president of Badminton Europe from 2010 to 2013.

As a player, Hoyer also enjoyed a stellar career, highlighted by his gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He also won three European Championship titles between 1992 and 1996 and defended his All-England title in 1995 and 1996.
