PETALING JAYA: Independent men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia is no stranger to the pressure that the singles players are under as Malaysia look to end a 34-year drought in the Thomas Cup starting from April 24-May 3.
To achieve that, Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh will need to play key roles in delivering points before the second doubles and third singles come into play.
However, both Jun Hao and Justin have come under heavy criticism following a series of underwhelming performances in recent months, drawing scrutiny from fans.
In a bid to ease the pressure on them, Zii Jia is willing to share his knowledge and experience as Malaysia aim to make an impact in Horsens.
Zii Jia featured as the second singles when he made his debut in 2018 in Bangkok, and in the next three editions in Aarhus 2020, Bangkok 2022 and Chengdu 2024, where he took on the role of Malaysia’s first singles.
“They (Jun Hao and Justin) have their own coaches, but anytime they need advice or anything, I am always there. I will not be selfish and will share whatever I know,” said Zii Jia.
For the first time, Zii Jia is set to feature as the third singles in the Thomas Cup, as he currently holds the lowest ranking among the country’s top men’s singles players.
Zii Jia is ranked No. 82 in the world, behind fellow independent player Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, who is ranked No. 51, while Jun Hao is at No. 25 and Justin No. 44.
Despite that, the Olympic bronze medallist does not expect an easier task and stressed that every player carries equal responsibility in ensuring victory.
“As long as you are selected for the team, there is no easy role. When you are in the line-up, everyone has an important part to play. It is not just about having your name in the list, we will all try our best to fight,” he added.
Zii Jia and the rest of the Malaysian squad for the Thomas and Uber Cup are currently in Herning, Denmark, for an eight-day centralised training camp before heading to Horsens next week.
Malaysia will open their Group B campaign against England on April 25, followed by Finland on April 27 and Japan on April 29.
