Hon Jian and Haikal split, play with new partners in Thailand

BAM's Mohd Haikal Nazri and Choong Hon Jian will play with different partners at the Thailand Open.

PETALING JAYA: Changes have also taken place in the national badminton camp, with doubles pair Choong Hon Jian-Mohd Haikal Nazri the latest to be split as they form new combinations.

The world No. 30 pair have been assigned new partners for the Thailand Open from May 12-17, according to the main and qualifying lists released on Friday (April 3).

Haikal will team up with Bryan Jeremy Goonting, while Hon Jian will partner Wong Vin Sean.

Both new combinations will begin their campaigns in the qualifying round.

Hon Jian-Haikal have been playing together since 2023 and initially showed promise after finishing runners-up at the Indonesian Masters before going on to win the Syed Modi International and Guwahati Masters.

They continued their progress by capturing the Orleans Masters title in 2024 and at one point climbed to a career-high world No. 18.

However, recurring injuries to both players at different times led to a dip in form, with the pair also struggling for confidence.

Their last outing together was at the All-England in March, where they suffered a first-round exit.

Meanwhile, as reported earlier, former 2021 World Championships bronze medallist Teo Ee Yi has been paired with Chia Weijie.

Ee Yi’s former partner Ong Yew Sin is expected to name his new partner soon.

The other professional pair will be playing with new partners are Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing. Jimmy is expected to team up with a BAM player.
