PETALING JAYA: World No. 6 men’s doubles shuttler Man Wei Chong will not require surgery for now.
The 26-year-old had previously revealed he suffered three serious injuries to his right knee, including one involving the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
National men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi said surgery is not something Wei Chong wants to consider at this stage.
He will continue under close monitoring and follow a specialised rehabilitation programme to keep him match-fit for two major tournaments in April, the Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, followed by the Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark.
Wei Chong is still able to train, though at a reduced intensity. Herry added that the player missed the Friday session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia due to a mild fever.
“There is still no surgery, not yet. He is still undergoing rehabilitation for his injury. Only the doctor can decide if surgery is necessary, but for now he is okay and training, though not at 100%,” said Herry.
Last week, Wei Chong made the bold decision to compete at the-All England Open despite his injury.
He and partner Tee Kai Wun can take pride in reaching the quarter-finals, ending their streak of first-round exits in three previous attempts at the tournament.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun are also among Herry’s top picks, after Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, for Malaysia’s squad in the Thomas Cup next month.
Malaysia are on a mission to end a 34-year wait for the Thomas Cup, having last won the title in 1992.
