Sze Fei-Izzuddin survive scare to reach Australian Open second round

PETALING JAYA: Independent shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani survived a fierce battle to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin had to come from behind to beat Taiwan’s world No. 22 Liu Kuang-heng-Yang Po-han 21-23, 21-17, 21-19 in an entertaining men’s doubles second round match lasting 59 minutes at the Sydney Olympic Park on Thursday (Nov 20).

The world No. 4 duo will next take on the winners of the match between Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Goh V Shem and his South Korean partner Choi Sol-gyu.

Malaysia’s challenge in the women’s singles though ended after world No. 49 Wong Ling Ching went down 16-21, 11-21 to Canada’s world No. 17 Michelle Li.

Ling Ching had toppled Michelle in the same stage in the Japan Masters last week but could not repeat her brave feat.
