PETALING JAYA: World No. 2 men’s doubles player Soh Wooi Yik has no intention of leaving the national squad to turn independent.
The 28-year-old’s clarification puts to rest the speculation that surfaced last week after he made a brief change to his personal Instagram bio.
Wooi Yik had updated it to “Pro Badminton Player”, which led to talk that he might be leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
However, Wooi Yik said social media is his personal space and he has no comment on the change, stressing that he remains committed to the national team and his partner Aaron Chia.
“I feel there is nothing to answer there. That social media is my private space. I didn't have any specific intentions. So, no comment on that. It's not what people are saying. I just did what I felt like doing myself,” said Wooi Yik.
Wooi Yik is under contract with the BAM until 2028 as he aims to help Malaysia win gold at the Los Angeles Olympics.
He and Aaron are currently preparing for the Asian Championships, which will be held in Ningbo, China from April 7-12.
