Ling Ching stuns world No. 15 Michelle in Japan Masters

PETALING JAYA: Women’s singles shuttler Wong Ling Ching pulled off a sensational win over Canada’s world No. 15 Michelle Li to reach the Japan Masters quarter-finals.

World No. 63 Ling Ching fought brilliantly to come away with a 21-17, 16-21, 21-19 victory in 62 minutes at the Kumamoto Prefectural Gymnasium on Thursday (Nov 13).

It was a huge breakthrough for Ling Ching, who has made it into the last eight of a World Tour Super 500 competition for the first time.

It was also the 22-year-old’s maiden win over a player ranked in the world’s top 20.

Ling Ching was the only Malaysian to advance to the quarter-finals in the singles events at the tournament this time.

The Sarawakian will next take on Thailand’s world No. 9 and former world champion Ratchanok Intanon for a place in the last four.
