PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Cheng Su Hui will have the chance to follow in the footsteps of her twin sister, Su Yin, after being given the opportunity to compete again in the mixed doubles event.
Su Hui revealed that she was informed of the decision only last week and accepted it with an open heart, describing it as a wish come true as she had long harboured the desire to play in the event again.
The last time Su Hui featured in mixed doubles was at the 2022 Malaysia International Series in Ipoh, where she partnered Beh Chun Meng. It was also the only mixed doubles tournament she competed in that year.
This time, however, she faces a tougher challenge as she will be competing in two events, including the women’s doubles with her current partner Tan Zhing Yi.
“I’m happy to play in two events because maybe there’s something for me in mixed doubles, so I want to give it a try," said Su Hui.
"I was really surprised when I was told about it. I spoke to my sister, Su Yin, and I’ve already started doing my homework by reviewing mixed doubles tactics.
"In women’s doubles, I usually play at the front, so I think it’s not that different, but I still need to raise my level,” said Su Hui.
Su Hui and Fazriq have been registered to compete at the Syed Modi International in India from Nov 25-30, although they are currently on the reserve list.
Her twin sister, Su Yin, will also feature in the tournament with partner Hoo Pang Ron, and the pair are set to go in as the top seeds.
Su Hui said she will begin full training with the mixed doubles squad under coach Nova Widianto after the Korean Masters starting on Tuesday.
"At the moment, my focus is still on the women’s doubles, and perhaps after next week’s tournament, I’ll sit down to discuss and train with Fazriq," she added.
