PETALING JAYA: National junior mixed doubles shuttler Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal may have changed partners, but it did not stop him from cruising into the second round of the Malaysian Junior International Challenge at Stadium Titiwangsa on Wednesday (July 22).

The 17-year-old teamed up with Teh Si Yan as the duo defeated compatriots Tian Ci Yee-Weng Yan Lee 21-13, 21-13 in the opening round.

Earlier this month, Redzuan captured the Asian Junior Championships mixed doubles title with Low Zi Yu in Japan.

While the 17-year-old Si Yan credited the victory to her partner’s encouragement and support, Redzuan said staying focused was the key to the winning start.

“We just played aggressively and stayed focused on our game,” said Redzuan.

Redzuan and Si Yan will next take on the Philippines’ John Vincent Lanuza-Jhiane Cloe Sabarillo.

Another Malaysian mixed doubles pair, Irfan Shazmir-Nur Aina Maisarah, also advanced after beating the Philippines’ Imari Dawn Jimenez-Ralph Nino Dalojo 21-7, 21-9.

In the men’s singles, Kong Wei Xiang defeated compatriot Wong Yin Heng 21-13, 21-9, while Chua Jing Xuan beat fellow Malaysian Chong Wan Xin 21-17, 21-16 in the women’s singles opening round.
