PETALING JAYA: National mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei has been given the all-clear to return to competition and she is eyeing to make her mark at next week’s Denmark Open after missing it last year.
The world champion confirmed that she has recovered from an abdominal injury which ruled her out of the Korean Open last month.
Her comeback will be a relief for the national team, especially as she and her partner Chen Tang Jie also skipped the tournament last year after she suffered a gash on her left hand that required stitches due to a freak accident in the gymnasium at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM).
Tang Jie-Ee Wei will head to Odense next week as the fourth seeds and will begin their campaign against Taiwan’s Yang Po-hsuan and Hu Ling-fang in the opening round.
“Yes, I’m ready for the Denmark Open. I’m fully fit now,” said Ee Wei briefly.
Her last outing was at the China Masters in Shenzhen on Sept 21, where she and Tang Jie finished as runners-up after losing to Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran in the final.
With Ee Wei now fully fit to reunite with Chen Tang Jie in Odense, their coach, Nova Widianto, is eager to see the world champions regain their momentum and live up to expectations.
Although the pair are not competing in this week’s Arctic Open, Nova hopes their upcoming three back-to-back tournaments – the Denmark Open (Oct 14-19), French Open (Oct 21-26) and Hylo Open (Oct 28-Nov 2) – will see them finish on the podium.
“I think since they are now world champions, the expectations from BAM and all Malaysians are certainly higher, and they must be ready for that. I hope they can win at least one of the three tournaments,” said Nova.
