New scoring system at world juniors keeps shuttlers more alert

PETALING JAYA: A new scoring system in the World Junior Championships mixed team event is keeping the national junior shuttlers on their toes.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) are implementing a different system this time in the competition where a player or pair must collect nine points to win a match with victory going to the first team to reach 45 points.

Five matches - men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles – will be played in each tie in the World Juniors team event which starts today in Guwahati, India.

The new system is a shortened version of the 110-points system implemented in last year’s edition.

2024 Under-18 boys’ singles champion Razeeq Danial Roslee said that the new system means that he and his teammates need to stay alert from the start in what will be much faster matches.

“We have been playing in simulation matches using the new scoring system as part of our preparation for the World Juniors,” said Razeeq.

“In this system, we have to warm up well and adapt quickly when the match starts. We have to be aggressive from the start as the matches are much shorter.”

Razeeq will be joined by Ayu Fu Sheng, Kong Wei Xiang and Lim Boon Le in the boys’ singles in the competition.

The others selected in the team this time are Eng Ler Qi, Oo Shan Zi, Lim Zhi Shin, Low Zi Yu (girls’ singles), Loh Ziheng, Tan Zhi Yang, Datu Anif Isaac, Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal, Damien Ling, Mohd Shazmir Irfan, Isyraf Hafizin Ibrahim (boys’ doubles and mixed doubles); Noraqilah Maisarah Ramsdan, Lee Joinne, Nur Aina Hatta, Nicole Tan, Nicole Chau, Teh Xin Ying, Teh Si Yan (girls’ doubles and mixed doubles).

Malaysia have been placed in Group C with Australia, Canada and Slovenia.

Only the group winners will progress to the quarter-finals.

In last year’s edition in Nanchang, China, the team took home bronze.
