Letshanaa claims first top 10 scalp to storm into Malaysian Masters quarters

K. Letshanaa

PETALING JAYA: Women’s singles shuttler K. Letshanaa stunned world No. 9 Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan to advance to the Malaysian Masters quarter-finals on Thursday (May 21).

World No. 32 Letshanaa marked her first win against a current top 10 player after beating third seed Miyazaki 21-15, 21-17 in 45 minutes at the Unifi Arena in Bukit Jalil.

The 22-year-old marked her first win against the Japanese player in three previous meetings, having lost to her recently at the German Open in February.

She will face another Japanese player in Hina Akechi in the quarter-finals.

Letshanaa is now one win away from equalling her best finish on the BWF World Tour after she made the semi-finals of the Super 500 Indonesian Masters.

She had also reached the quarter-finals of the Thailand Masters last week before falling to compatriot Goh Jin Wei.

However, Jin Wei’s run at the home tournament ended in the second round after she lost 13-21, 16-21 to India’s Ashmita Chaliha.
