PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie saw their Malaysian Masters campaign end earlier than expected after suffering a second round defeat on Thursday (May 21).

The sixth seeds went down 19-21, 21-7, 19-21 to Taiwan’s Wu Guan-xun-Lee Chia-hsin in 52 minutes.

Shevon admitted it was a disappointing outcome, especially after the pair had made solid preparations for their home tournament.

“Coming into this tournament, we had high hopes because our preparations were very good and everything had been positive. We wanted to achieve a good result here, both in terms of performance and consistency, and hoped to make a deep run.

“But it is disappointing because there have been a few times when we set our targets and fell short. There are things we need to review because we are still facing these same challenges,” said Shevon.

Soon Huat, meanwhile, admitted their mistakes in the deciding game allowed their opponents to fight back, with the strong draft on their side of the court adding to their struggles.

“At the crucial points, we did not control the shuttle well, especially on the side of the court where the draft was stronger in the third game. We were too rushed in trying to win points and that was our mistake,” said Soon Huat.

Soon Huat-Shevon will head to Singapore next week for the Singapore Open, where they will face South Korea’s Kim Jae-hyeon-Jang Ha-jeong in the first round.
